The Hypochondriacs have resurrected from the traditional country crypt, to a fresh and raw take to the standard genre. Though profoundly influenced by early Rockabilly, they are a taste of 60s doo-wop and 70s folk-rock. In the musical sense, yacht rock refers to the highly polished brand of soft rock that emanated from Southern California between 1976 and 1984. The term is meant to suggest the kind of smooth, mellow music that early yuppies likely enjoyed while sipping champagne on their yachts. Significant "yacht rockers" include Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Steely Dan, Toto and many more. In 2010, Jack Thorpe, the athlete’s son, filed a lawsuit that demanded the return of his father’s remains for reburial in Thorpe’s tribal homeland in Oklahoma.

Based in Northeast Pennsylvania, Hunkajunk is a 7-9 piece band of seasoned professionals blazing their way through a diverse repertoire of select retro hits, modern classics, and original jams. Formed in 2015, the band has brought their energetic show to weddings, casinos, shore points and festivals all over the northeast corridor. Using $10,000 from the fundraising campaign, the town erected an elaborate red marble mausoleum on a hill in East Mauch Chunk. An elaborate ceremony officiated in part by Native Americans honored the athlete. His crypt was sealed with soil from his hometown in the Sac and Fox nation, the track fields from the Stockholm Olympics, and the grounds of the Carlisle Industrial Indian School. In 2007, a life-sized bronze statue of Thorpe in his football uniform was erected at the memorial.

Fortunately, the town didn’t have enough funds to bulldoze many of its dilapidated buildings as it originally planned. Among those are the Mauch Chunk Opera House and the Inn at Jim Thorpe. Since the town’s rebirth, storefronts and homes on Race and Broad Streets have been welcoming visitors with their unique charm and history. It started as a wistful late-night idea nearly 20 years ago while sitting on a front porch stoop. Get the latest updates on upcoming shows, new announcements, and special promotions.

Thorpe claimed that the town is keeping his father’s bones as a tourist attraction. Following multiple appeals, the case made it all the way to the U.S. The highest judicial branch denied the appeal, ruling for the remains to stay in Jim Thorpe in 2015. Following Thorpe’s death in 1953, his third wife and widow Patricia Gladys Askew sought ways to commemorate her late husband. His native Oklahoma refused to erect a memorial so she took her search elsewhere.

Today his powerful vocals and stage presence breathes new life into the Guess Who hits, staying true to the original sound. THE GUESS WHO ALUMNI features Bill Wallace who wrote some of those famous Guess Who chart busters and his long time friend and band mate Donnie McDougall from The Guess Who glory days and reunion tour. On drums is Mark Santer of Canadian rock band Santers, who subbed for Garry Peterson, and brilliant guitarist Laurie MacKenzie, who was in The Guess Who for eight years. Together it’s an uplifting night of music, harmonies and stories from top musicians who have played in The Guess Who.

The Grand Finale: Dan Hugos, Co-Founder of Mauch Chunk Opera House Shows, Retires

“In the early days, we had to tape off seats, so people didn’t sit and get a wet behind after it rained,” Hugos said. As the opera house concerts expanded, Hugos continued to travel from NYC on weekends while managing the business. In 2005, he took the leap and moved to Jim Thorpe full time, keeping things afloat financially by working as a database programmer for PA companies like Air Products, PPL, Carpenter Steel, CompAid,  and DEKA Battery. “I was working full-time, non-stop, 7 days a week, but it was the only way to keep the opera house going,” he said. Late at night, after one of his gallery exhibition receptions, Dan and his neighbor, Vince, whom he hired to play music during the event, sat on the front house steps and pondered why the building was so neglected.

Serene Green’s desire is to honor the traditional side of bluegrass demonstrated by the pioneers of the genre, while also showcasing its original compositions and uniqueness. Since the band’s inception in 2017, Serene Green has played in three countries and in over twenty of the United States, performed at countless festivals and venues alongside many nationally- and internationally-touring acts, and released three studio albums. If your thing is the music of Elton John and his band, then this is the perfect show for you. Greg Ransom plays the Elton John character with aplomb, but most importantly – he has mastered the songs, both vocally and on the piano. His band is top-shelf too, pulling together all the parts of a master’s music and performing it like you want to hear it.
