The Kilcher homestead grew from 160 acres to 600 acres of land. As time wore on, Yule saw how other homesteads around Kachemak Bay were slowly being divided up between family members and becoming smaller versions of the previous homestead. He did not want the hard work of his family's homestead to disappear.
Because there were no roads, and only the beach to travel the 12 miles to town, the children were all first home schooled. The eldest son Atz Kilcher and his wife Bonnie Dupree are also heavily featured in the show; Atz was also previously married, but not much information is known about that marriage. They have two children together, and he also has three children from his previous marriage along with a child with another woman.

In the early 1940’s Yule Kilcher and his bride Ruth came to Alaska from Switzerland to start a new life in Homer, on the shores of Kachemak Bay. During that time they farmed and cleared land for crops and logged the trees for their new log house with only a team of horses, and hand tools. After many years they obtained more land via the Homestead Act and raised their large family of 8 children in the log house that Yule and Ruth had built by hand. Over the years, the homestead has grown to 600 acres, and a few conveniences have come along, too .
